How Horses Learn Best: Learning Theory in Context 2020

  • 30-day access

I've been teaching the importance of understanding learning theory in context since the first CPD day I was asked to deliver for the APBC back in 2005.

But over the years I have repeatedly observed trainers looking purely at the mechanics of learning theory, without really understanding the context, that is, the horse. How is the horse feeling? What is going on inside the horse? How is that likely to be expressed in terms of behaviour and consequences for safety?

We can only completely understand and effectively apply learning theory principles if we also understand the context.

In 2019 the British Horse Society asked me to write a chapter on Learning Theory for their latest book, Complete Horsemanship Volume Four. Then on 28th February 2020 I was asked to deliver CPD based on that chapter. This course is the video footage from that day, delivered at Enniskillen College. Huge thanks to Susan Spratt of the BHS, all the staff and students at the college, and the great audience that attended.
